It is with great pleasure that I introduce this year’s first issue of African Journal of Business and Economic Research (AJBER). This issue features nine papers, covering three African countries; South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana, while one take a multi-country approach. For South Africa, topics covered addresses the issues relating to fiscal policy and economic growth, money and happiness, employee engagement and its relationship to productivity in the sugar industry, and the inadequate disclosure of human capital in corporate annual reports. For Nigeria, the papers looked at the challenges in beverage labour market, enhancing the quality of market capitalization, and assessing the correlation between occupational stress and several. From Ghana, the paper analyses the problem of business tax evasion. This issue features ten papers, covering six African countries; Ghana, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe. The topics covered addresses the issues ranging from stock market efficiency to executive directors’ remuneration disclosure; the viability of emerging and frontier currency carry trades as an asset class in Africa; effectiveness of business management and entrepreneurship training offered by small and medium enterprise service providers; perceptions of various aspects of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment; gender gap in accessing formal credit for entrepreneurial purposes; organizational alignment; brand awareness and loyalty; government expenditure, economic growth and unemployment. This final issue of 2017 brings together six papers that tackle the turbulence in the African Business and Economic environment from discussions revolving around the subject of weak institutions (Ayadi, Williams, Desselle and Hyman; El Ebrashi and Abdel Aziz, this issue), to public-sector management challenges (Amoako, Okpattah, Gameti and Attasitsey; Modise and Rambe, this issue), and the role of ethical leadership (Kirsten, Wordsworth and Du Plessis ; Grobler, this issue). Starting with the first set of two papers, Ayadi et al., set out to highlight how weak institutional environments accentuate macroeconomic performance. The study examines the relationship between a measure of sustainability and the components of the Country Policy and Institutional Assessment (CPIA) launched in Nigeria in 2004.
