At the Crossroads: Perceptions of Stakeholders on the Distribution of Contraceptives to Secondary School Learners in Bulilima District, Zimbabwe

The study explores perceptions on the distribution of contraceptives to learners as a preventative measure against pregnancy and HIV infection. The study is informed by the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behaviour and Ecological systems theory. Qualitative descriptive survey design is used in were data is collected through focus group discussions, open ended questionnaires and in depth interviews. A sample of thirty-two (32) participants is used. Tesch’s method of data analysis is instrumental in data analysis. Participants’ perceptions are condensed into two main themes; human rights and prevention perspectives and both appear to support the provision of contraceptives to learners.

This study examined knowledge and attitude of academic staff of universities towards National Health insurance scheme in Rivers State. Study was guided by two research questions and one hypothesis. The cross-sectional survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 3,154 academic staff from (University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University & Ignatius Ajuru University of Education). The sample size consisted of 425 academic staff while the instrument for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire, the instrument was validated and test, retest method was used to ascertain the reliability coefficient index and 0.93 was obtained using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Percentage distribution was used to answer research question 1 while mean and standard deviation was used to answer research question 2; hypothesis was tested with z-test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is no significant difference in attitude towards NHIS among academic staff of universities in Rivers State with respect to gender. The study recommended among others that Ministry of Health should make efforts to intensify campaign by emphasizing on the objectives, component and workings of knowledge and attitude of National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS using the mass media and other means.
