From the lofty perch of political theory to the gritty realities of organ trafficking and xenophobic violence, these studies collectively diagnose a continent grappling with the enduring consequences of its historical making and the fraught politics of its contemporary unmaking. The central thread that binds these diverse inquiries is the persistent question of the state: its legitimacy, its capacity, its failures, and the myriad ways in which individuals and communities navigate the precarious spaces it creates or abandons.

The volume opens by excavating the philosophical and historical foundations upon which the modern African state was built. As Ngcamphalala and Ehiane argue in their critique of the social contract and international human rights regime, the universalist claims of Western liberalism often clash with, and seek to supplant, indigenous conceptions of community and obligation. This theoretical fault line is deepened by Adejumo-Ayibiowu, who posits that neoliberalism's erosion of collective sovereignty has created a cultural and political vacuum. This historical detour is crucial; it reminds us, as Ugwoke et al. demonstrate with Nigeria, that the violent extraction and arbitrary borders of colonialism seeded the very political instability that plagues the continent today. The promise of an alternative, as Mbatha provocatively questions, may have been a "grand deception" from the start, leaving postcolonial states with borrowed institutions ill-suited to their societies.

From these foundational critiques, the focus sharpens on the manifest symptoms of state failure. Onah, Dimonye, and Ogbodo frame Nigerian development as a series of "adventures and misadventures," a chaotic policy landscape where the absence of a coherent national project creates governance gaps. These gaps, as Ajah and Magadze meticulously detail, are the breeding grounds for organized crime, which fills the void left by a retreating or predatory state. The state's failure to perform its most basic functions, to protect the life and dignity of its citizens is nowhere more starkly illustrated than in Adeyanju et al. 's chilling exposé on the "silent crisis" of organ trafficking in Nigeria. Here, human bodies are reduced to commodities in a macabre market, the ultimate expression of a social contract in tatters. In response to this security vacuum, we see the rise of sub-state initiatives like Operation Amotekun, examined by Adedayo et al. While presented as a community solution to insecurity, such regional security outfits also raise complex questions about federalism, legality, and the potential for further fragmentation a conundrum at the heart of the West African security architecture explored by Ayuk et al. , where the search for security within an unsecured environment often produces its own set of risks.

The volume then turns to the spectre of authoritarianism and militarism, with Zimbabwe serving as a powerful case study. Makamure revisits the nationalist armed struggle, reminding us that the postcolonial state was often born of violence. This martial origin casts a long shadow, as Mangani and Breakfast demonstrate in their critique of Zimbabwe's praetorian military, which transitioned from a liberation army to a key political actor, ultimately deciding the fate of governments. The state's dysfunction extends beyond the security sector into its economic management. Matambo's analysis of Zimbabwe's "premature" Sovereign Wealth Fund reveals a policy transfer disaster a "presource curse" where states adopt complex financial instruments without the institutional capacity or accountability to manage them, further entrenching economic precarity.

Perhaps the most visceral and human dimension of this crisis is captured in the papers on migration and displacement. The movement of people, whether voluntary or forced, becomes a central lens through which to view the collapse of viable life prospects at home. Nathan, Akanle, and Bada explore the emotional and economic calculus of Nigerian transnational families, who must navigate separation as a coping mechanism. This experience turns tragic in Ofem et al. 's study of communities in Cross River State hosting those fleeing the Ambazonia crisis, showing how regional conflicts create new security challenges and humanitarian pressures across borders. Within host nations, the reception is often hostile. Nyamadzawo's heartbreaking study of the "internalisation of xenophobic violence" among migrant children in South Africa reveals how prejudice is passed down, creating a new generation marked by trauma and exclusion. Yet, as Adetiba argues, African migrants are not merely victims; they are fundamental agents in the informal economies of their host countries, their role rendered invisible by xenophobic discourse. The historical depth of this marginalization is chillingly exposed by Nwokorie and Ani, whose work on the experiences of Igbo migrants after the Nigerian Civil War draws a disturbing parallel between past and present, using the powerful and painful concept of "neoslavery" to describe the exploitation and subjugation they faced.

Finally, the collection situates these internal dynamics within a global context of geopolitical influence. Ringson's study on INGOs in Africa delivers a critical punch, reframing international "philanthropy" as a form of politics. By scrutinizing the agendas that often accompany foreign aid and civil society funding, he questions the sovereignty of African states to determine their own paths, suggesting that regime change can be pursued not by tanks, but through grants and NGOs.

In sum, this collection moves beyond simplistic narratives of African failure. It offers a sophisticated, interconnected diagnosis of a continent where the historical project of the state is deeply contested. From the philosophical fault lines of its founding to the militarism of its guardians, from the desperation of its migrants to the political projects of external actors, the picture that emerges is one of profound instability. Yet, within these studies, there is also a story of survival, adaptation, and an enduring, if battered, human spirit navigating the precarious terrain of a state-in-question. The central challenge posed by this volume is whether Africa can move beyond these "adventures and misadventures" to forge a new, more legitimate, and more humane social contract from the ground up.
