Africa and the War on Terrorism

In this edition
In the November/December edition of the journal, we dealt with one of the most intractable problems in the continent: wars and conflicts. We posed, and sought answers to a number of fundamental questions: Is Africa, specifically sub-Saharan Africa, doomed Will Africa ever know peace What are the real causes of wars and conflicts in the continent And what should be done to prevent wars and effectively manage conflicts
In this edition we examine Americas War on Terrorism following the events of September 11 2001 in that country, and their aftermaths. The war has been the dominant global rhetoric ever since that unfortunate incident, with global ramifications. But what are the implications of the war for Africa How will it impact on the current democracy projects in the continent And how will it affect Muslim-Christian relations These are some of the questions contributors seek to answer in this edition. Of course the discussion of the various contributions in the lead theme is, as usual, bound to enlighten and provoke.
Besides the lead themes we have also many other thought-provoking articles from Professor Ali Mazruis Towards Post Colonial pacification to Anne Serafins review of Josef Guglers African Film: Re-imagining a Continent.
Feedback
We sent emails to many of our contributors, subscribers and friends asking what they thought about our current editorial format. Basically we wanted to know whether our current seminar/workshop format where we have others discuss some of the contributions in the lead theme - is a distraction or not, and whether our strategy of announcing the lead theme in advance should be kept or discarded. Most of the respondents felt that our seminar/workshop format adds value to the journal, and also gives it a unique identity. A slim majority however felt that announcing the lead theme for the following edition in advance - as we have done until now - is bad business. We have therefore, for now, retained our seminar/workshop model but will no longer be announcing the lead theme for the following edition in advance.
