The Reviewing Process

All submissions to the journal are initially reviewed by the Editor and, if it is judged suitable for this journal, it is then sent to an independent reviewer. Based on the reviewer’s recommendations, the Editor then decides whether the paper should be accepted as it is, revised or rejected. In order to facilitate processing of submissions, please make sure that you:

1. Attach a separate cover page with title of the manuscript, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), including email address.
2. Include only the title page on the first page of the manuscript in order to maintain anonymity.
3. Formatting requirements: While there are no strict formatting requirements, all manuscripts must include an Abstract of not more than150 words, Keywords, Introduction, Literature Review, Theoretical Considerations, Analyses,  Conclusions, and Notes, and References - in a double-spaced format, allowing a one-inch margin on all sides. Please keep notes at a minimum. The manuscript should not exceed 6000 words.
4. Figures and tables: Please ensure that the figures and the tables are inserted next to the relevant text in the manuscript where they are cited, rather than at the bottom or the top of the file.
5. References: References to other publications should be complete and should contain full bibliographical details. Please use the Harvard system of referencing. For multiple citations in the same year use a, b, c immediately following the year of publication. References should be shown within the text by giving the author's last name followed by a comma and year of publication all in round brackets, e.g. (Kuada, 1994). The following examples illustrate the style of referencing used in the journal:
(a). Books: Surname, initials and year of publication, title, publisher, place of publication, e.g. Kuada, J.(1994), Managerial Behaviour in Ghana and Kenya – A Cultural Perspective, (Aalborg, Aalborg University Press, ). Please, note that the title of books must be in italics.
(b). Chapter in edited book: surname, initials and year, "title", editor's surname, initials, title, publisher, place, pages, e.g. Whitley, R. (2001), “Developing Capitalism: The Comparative Analysis of Emerging Business Systems” in Jacobsen, G. and Torp, J.E. (Eds.) Understanding Business Systems in Developing Countries, (New Delhi, Sage). pp:25-41. Please, note that the title of the book must be in italics.
(c). Articles: Surname, initials, year "title", journal, volume, number, pages, e.g. Kuada, J. (2002),“Collaboration between developed and developing country-based firms: Danish-Ghanaian experience” Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing,  Vol. 17 No. 6 pp: 538-557. Please, note that the title of the journal must be in italics. If there is more than one author to a paper, please list all authors with their surnames followed by initials.
6. Resubmissions: Where a paper has been accepted subject to certain corrections being effected, the author(s), should, on returning the corrected paper, detail in a separate page how the suggested corrections have been addressed in the paper. Failure to provide this, the journal may decline to publish such a paper.
7. Articles accepted for publication by Journal Editors/Guest Editors must be accompanied by the Review Form which details comments on the article by the reviewer(s). This is not aimed at micromanaging anyone but for record keeping and to ensure that requisite standards are maintained. We may decline to publish any accepted article not accompanied by a Review Form.

Publication fees

Effective from September 1 2018, JOAFA is introducing a publication fee of £150 for all accepted manuscripts. The motivation for this change is to raise revenue to cover increased costs of running the journal. Note that up to 50 per cent discount can, on the recommendation of the editor, be offered to individuals, especially those from sub-Saharan African countries who cannot afford to pay the publication fee. As part of the publication fee, a print copy of the journal will be sent by ordinary post to the author or to the lead author in cases of multi-authored articles. Authors who want additional print copies or for the copies to be sent by courier will have to pay for the cost of the extra copy (less author discount of 20%) or the courier cost.
8. All manuscripts must be spell and grammar checked by a professional English language editor. Authors are encouraged to attach evidence of professional proofreading/editing when submitting their papers. The journal reserves the right to refuse to publish an article if it deems the paper poorly proofread for language and grammar. Should authors want the journal to do the proofreading for them; this will be at an additional cost of £100.

Special Issues and Supplements

Inquiries by conference organisers on publishing special issues or supplements in the journal shall be directed to the journal’s editor through info@adonis-abbey.com, who will evaluate and determine whether the articles will fit well into the objectives and scope of the journal.
Where the editor decides that the papers from such a conference will fit into the aims, objectives and scope of the journal, the editor shall be in the editorial board that selects the final papers – to ensure that the journal’s standards are upheld.

1. Ethics Policy: The publication of an article in the Journal of African Foreign Affairs is a direct reflection of the quality of the work of the authors and their respective institutional affiliations. Peer-reviewed articles need to meet minimum standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the act of publishing: notably the author(s), journal editor, peer reviewer(s), publisher and the wider society amongst other stakeholders. Manuscripts in breach of these thresholds would be subject to retraction even after publication. JoAFA’s ethical policy follows the guidelines of COPE (Committee of Publication Ethics). We are particular about unethical submission practices on the part of authors (see section 1.1); breach of publishing agreement (section 1.2); and any conflict of interest on the part of both authors and reviewers (section 1.3)

1.1 Submission Policy: Submission of an article implies that it has not been previously published (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis); is not under consideration for publication elsewhere (i.e. multiple submissions); its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out; and, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, without the written consent of the copyright-holder. To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service CrossCheck or alternative tools.

1.2 Journal Publishing Agreement and Copyrights: Upon acceptance of a manuscript, authors will be asked to complete a return a signed Journal Publishing Agreement Download Template Here.

An e-mail will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with the attached Journal Publishing Agreement. Subscribers may reproduce tables of contents or prepare lists of articles including abstracts for internal circulation within their institutions. Permission of the Publisher is required for any distribution outside the institution, including compilations and translations. If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article.

1.3 Declaration of interest: All authors are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial, personal or other relationships with other people or organizations within three years of beginning the submitted work that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work. Failure to comply with these terms and conditions may result in a retraction (see section 2).

2. Retraction/ Correction Policy: Authors are expected to carefully the list and order of author prior to any manuscript submissions, and provide to provide a list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any additions, deletion or rearrangement of authorship should be made only before the manuscript has been accepted and only if approved by the journal Editor. To request any such changes, the Editor must receive, from the corresponding author, clear justifications for: (a) the reason for the change in author list, and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published in an online issue, any requests approved by the Editor will result in a corrigendum.

3. ARCHIVING POLICY: In the unlikely event that JoAFA ceases publishing, all previous volumes and issues would be archived by Sabinet – see the Official website at: http://www.journals.co.za/content/journal/aa_jafa
